Preparing for Your Child’s First Appointment

December 15 2019

Children, like adults, aren’t always happy to do things they aren’t familiar with or comfortable with and that’s ok! First hair appointments can lead to anxiety, tears, and tantrums for little ones but it doesn’t have to, read on below to learn some tips and tricks to make your child’s first hair appointment a great one!

Take Time for Preparation
Depending on the services your child will be receiving, they can be lengthy like a braiding appointment. Try to schedule their appointment during times the child is not normally napping or overly tired. The best way to prepare your child for her appointment is to talk with her about what is going to be done. During your conversations, encourage her to ask any questions that you can answer about the services she will receive.

Scissors, hairdryers, and other loud equipment can be scary, so it is a good idea to explain these things beforehand, giving time to explain any words that can be frightening like “cut” in which you can opt to use the word “trim.”

Another thing that easily frightens little ones is the shampoo bowl. The thought of water getting in their eyes can scare them. Parents can help prepare their child for the shampoo part by demonstrating to them how their head will lay back in the bowl. There are videos on YouTube that you can show them of kids getting their hair shampooed at a salon so they will know what to expect.

Day of the Appointment
Your child, the stylist, and yourself will have a much better experience if the child feels comfortable. Ensure your child has eaten a well-balanced meal prior to the appointment, low blood sugar can make little ones crabby! Bringing toys or books is a great way to keep your child busy while you wait for your appointment to start, because it’s a hair salon, it is better to keep plush animals and blankets at home, though! During your child’s appointment, reassure them they are doing great and encourage them to take prompts from their stylist to avoid any accidental snips!

Taking little steps before and during your child’s appointment will ensure she has a great first hair care experience in a salon setting! Our goal at Just 4 Girls Salon is to create healthy hair for life and that starts by creating an enjoyable and relaxing experience for your child.
