Cold Weather Tips for Your Child’s Natural Hair

September 30 2021

The cold weather isn’t quite fully here yet …. But it’s coming! We wanted to give you plenty of time to prepare and learn how to keep your little one’s hair amped up and healthy during the colder months. Here are 5 tips that our fabulous stylists have put together to protect their hair during fall and winter.

We all love routines. Kids thrive on routines – and so do their hair. Keeping a routine on which day of the week is hairwashing can save both of you a lot of frustration and tears by mentally being prepared, especially if your child isn’t a fan. Set up an appointment at Just 4 Girls Salon for a protective style and plan on when during the month to redo the style as needed.

Moisturize daily. Properly moisturizing your child’s hair is especially important during fall and winter when the cold, dry hair tends to suck that moisture right out of their hair. Plan on deep conditioning their hair at least once a week or once every other week as well. Use our Bubbly Beautiful Leave-In Conditioner to strengthen, smooth, and detangle. If you see that your child’s hair needs some extra TLC, ask your Just 4 Girls stylist about our Hydration Treatment or Advanced Conditioning Treatment to prevent breakage and keep their hair healthy and manageable.

Minimal washing. Your kids are going to love this one! Multiple washing leads to dry hair, especially in the fall and winter. Once a week is all they really need unless they’ve been playing in dirt or sand to enjoy the break from hair washing. Never let your child go outside with wet hair either!

Turn on the humidifier. There’s a two-part to this. One, if your home is getting dried out from running the heater, use a humidifier in the home to put moisture back into the air. Two, use a humidifier or steam on your child’s hair twice a month when you deep condition. Besides adding moisture into their hair, steaming also encourages growth and length retention. Steaming has so many benefits to their hair!

Make hats a fashion statement. When it’s windy, cold, and dry outside, hats will protect their hair from breakage and drying out. Make sure that their wool or cotton hats are lined with satin. If not, simply add a small silk scarf to help protect against the material from rubbing against the hair which can cause the hair to break or become tangled.

Taking care of our natural-haired kiddos can be a challenge. Make your fall and winter season as easy as possible with these tips.
