Keep Your Child’s Protective Style Healthy and Looking Good

February 15 2021

Protective styles are great for your little ones but just keep in mind that the hair and scalp still need to be taken care of to ensure the growth and health of your baby girl’s hair. At Just 4 Girls, we can give your little ones a style that they love, offer hair care products and when it’s time, we offer Advanced Detangling which will condition your little one’s hair and painlessly work out their tangles.

What is a protective style? It’s any style that keeps the ends of the hair tucked away and needs less manipulation. It gives the end of your hair a break from cold winter conditions by tucking the delicate strands together so there’s “safety in numbers.” When your child has their hair in a protective style, it’s less prone to snagging and knotting on things, but there’s care we still need to take.

At Just 4 Girls Salon, our stylists are child hair experts! Here are some great tips on how to take care of their twists and braids at home in between appointments.

Wrap up nightly. Keep the fuzzies away by committing to find something to protect your child’s hair nightly. I know that most kids won’t wear a scarf all night so a satin pillowcase or satin bonnet might be a good choice. A cotton pillowcase, as soft as it may be, absorbs all the good moisture, catches easily on hair strands, and can cause breakage.

Protect the hairline. If your child’s hair is braided too tightly, breakage can be caused around the hairline. The hair is thinner around the hairline, making it more fragile so our stylists make sure to take care when braiding your child’s hair. It’s also important for you to keep the edges moisturized when you moisturize the rest of the hair.

Moisturize hair regularly. Our Bubbly Beautiful Be Strong Leave-In Conditioner Spray is the perfect thing to use. Spray it on your child’s hair every other day and then you can use just a touch of an oil such as EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) to seal it in. If you find that their hair is becoming a little frizzy around the edges, use Be Smooth Edge Control to tame those smoothies until it’s time to uninstall their style.

Don’t extend their style for too long. We all want their style to last as long as possible. You can also make it into a ponytail or a half updo. If your child doesn’t sit still well for braids and twists, we know that you want to get maximum wear out of your protective style! When it’s time, bring your little one back into Just 4 Girls and we can tenderly uninstall the style.

Our stylists love kids and are experienced with fidgety little ones. We can give your child a protective style that will last, keep their hair healthy, and will help their hair grow!
