Make Your Child’s First Hair Salon Visit an Enjoyable One

October 14 2020

Children can be scared of change, and for some, even first hair appointments can bring your little one’s anxiety and tears. Now add all the Covid-19 precautions, and your child can be downright dreading their hair appointment! Although things do look a little different in our salons right now, we know how your little one feels and our stylists are compassionate when it comes to their fears or worries.

COVID Precautions. We try to make these COVID-19 changes in our salon seem as nonchalant and “normal” as possible. We require all our clients and employees to wear masks. When you and your child arrive, you will both get a temperature check, but it’s so quick and easy, your child will hardly notice! We are currently using disposable capes for their safety. We are limiting the number of people in the salon at a time, but this can work to your advantage as the activity and noise will be reduced, helping to calm your child.

Prepare your child before their visit. Talk to your child about what’s going to happen when they visit. If they are small enough, perhaps “show” them with a favorite doll what will happen and walk through the steps with them. Encourage them to ask questions so that they will know exactly what to expect. Explain that hair dryers can be loud, their stylist will be cutting with scissors, and that they will need to sit still for a little bit but you will be right there with them. Use words such as “trim” or “shorten the hair” instead of “cut,” which can sound scary.

Plan your appointment time. If your child will be receiving braids or other services that involve some time, try to schedule their appointment for first thing in the morning or another time where they aren’t overly tired or where it’ll run into their nap time.

Day of your appointment. Start their day off with a well-balanced meal. Remind them that they will have to wear their mask while getting their hair styled and walk them through the steps again just to allow them to ask any other questions or voice concerns. Because of loose hairs and due to COVID-19 concerns, it’s a good idea to leave blankets and stuffed animals at home, but you can bring a book or one hard toy that can be disinfected to give them something to focus on. During the appointment, be sure to give them kudos as to how well they are behaving, how still they are sitting, and what a big girl they are being! Kids love praise, and they will be getting it from their Just 4 Girls stylist too!

There are a lot of added fears and stress to our kids these days with the COVID-19 pandemic! Having a great first hair care experience should be fun and relaxing for your child. Our stylists will do everything in their power to make your little one feel at ease.
