Caring for Child’s Locs and Family-Friendly Labor Day Fun

August 15 2021

As we begin the school year, you may have thought about opting to loc your child’s hair. At Just 4 Girls Salon, we can help you determine if it’s the right thing for your child’s hair, we can loc or twist your child’s hair, and then we’ll make sure you have the right products to protect their hair and help their locs last as long as possible.

Here are 4 steps to keeping their locs neat and moisturized:

  1. Regularly cleanse their locs. It’s a good idea to get into a routine with your child on washing their locs. Dirt and sweat can build up allowing bacteria to grow resulting in an itchy scalp, scalp irritation, and hair breakage. Using a clarifying shampoo such as our Be Amazing Shampoo will help keep their locs clean. Pick a time where their locs can dry naturally which, depending on thickness, texture, and length, can be anywhere from a couple of hours to 24 hours.

  2. Keep the scalp moisturized. Besides keeping their hair healthy and free from breakage, consistent massage with a natural oil or Be Strong Leave-In into their hair has many other benefits. It promotes new growth while keeping their hair and scalp moisturized. But perhaps most importantly for us parents, a regular head massage will make our little ones more relaxed and more prone to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

  3. Let the experts retwist. Over manipulating or over twisting their locs can create breakage and cause thinning at the root. Have fun with some easy hairstyles with the locs that keep them looking neat or come into our Just 4 Girls Salon when and let our stylists fix or re-twist their hair as needed.

  4. Protect hair at night. Just as with other hairstyles for our natural-haired cuties, make sure they sleep with a satin or silk bonnet and/or pillowcase. Using these soft materials helps to prevent breakage from excessive rubbing while keeping the moisture sealed into the hair and scalp.

As Labor Day approaches, here are some family-friendly activities to enjoy the last days of summer.

Pioneer Days Festival. This four-day festival is packed full of games for the kids, a balloon bust, an arts & craft show, and a fireworks show. It runs from Sept 3 – 6, and kids 10 and younger are free.

Art in the Park at Marietta Square. This admission-free event gives the artists in all of us a chance to display our skills with Chalk Spot. You can also view works from 175 artists, sample good food, and let your kids show off their creativity with artwork they can take home. Sept 4-6, 2021

Stone Mountain Park. Honor America’s heroes with family-friendly attractions, fireworks, and a Laser Show Spectacular. This is a big event each year so be sure to give your family the whole day to enjoy.

Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival. This annual event runs from Sept 3-5, 2021, and is a truly magical experience. Enjoy the Friday night balloon glow, daily balloon launches, live music, beach activities, a car show, and kids’ zone. Make this a family tradition!
